Definition of Calorie

In general, a calorie is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius.

  • Calories are used to measure energy.
  • Calories act as fuel to our bodies, i.e. they provide energy in the form of heat so that our body can function.
  • Our bodies store them and burn them whenever we do work.
  • The amount of energy released when our body breaks down food in the processes of digestion and absorption is taken as calories.
  • More energy can be provided by food that contains a greater number of calories.
  • Fat-free food can also produce lots of calories.
  • The extra calories in any form can be stored as body fat.
  • The calorie which is seen on the food packets is a kilocalorie.

Understanding Weight Gain, Calories and Nutrients

Weight gain is caused when there is an excessive calorie intake and not burning them enough. When the calories are not burnt, they slowly form into fat and accumulate in some parts of our body.

  • Fat is one of the most important nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. Carbohydrates, proteins, mineral, vitamins, and water are some of the other most important nutrients.
  • We can get Carbohydrates from fruits, vegetables, pasta, rice, grains, peas, beans, and other legumes. Meat, poultry, dairy products, eggs, and beans are some of the food from which we get plenty of protein.
  • Minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, and Vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K are found in dairy products, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and some kinds of seafood.
  • Among all these six nutrients, carbohydrates, protein, and fats provide calories. We get 4 calories per each gram of carbohydrates and proteins and 9 calories from each gram of fats.

Here the quality of the calories also plays an important role in maintaining health.

Depending on their nutritional values, calories are categorized as follows:

  • High calorie.
  • Low calorie.
  • Empty calorie.
  • Oils, fried foods, sugary foods are examples of high-calorie foods. High-calorie food does mean they are unhealthy foods; even avocados, quinoa, bananas, nuts, and whole grains are all high-calorie foods, but they are healthy.
  • Low-calorie foods include vegetables and certain fruits, among other things, while empty calories are calories that contain few to no nutrients such as added sugars and solid fats.

Remember, when your body is hungry, it needs nutrients — not calories.


In general, Mifflin-St Jeor Equation calculates basal metabolic rate (BMR). This calorie meter works on this equation, and the results are given by considering all the average values. BMR is the amount of energy expended per day at rest.

There exist other equations including the Harris-Benedict Equation which was used until 1990 before the introduction of the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation and the Katch-McArdle Formula which calculates resting daily energy expenditure (RDEE) by taking lean body mass into account.

The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation gives the most accurate equation for calculating BMR, with the exception that the Katch-McArdle Formula can be more accurate for people who are leaner that know their body fat percentage. The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation is as follows:

For an adult (men):
BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) + 5
For an adult (women):
BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) - 161
