When we say body mass, it is the mass of the body including all the components — organs, water, skin, muscle and fat. The name ‘lean’ itself indicates that there is no fat; which means the lean body mass excludes the fat from the entire body mass.
Lean Body Mass includes the total weight of a human body, except the fat.
This is the next obvious question that would arise for a gym doer. Are these both the same? Let’s talk.
They both are different. Lean body mass includes, as we said, organs, skins, bones, body water and the muscle. Note that muscle mass is also included in the lean body mass.
In other words, lean body mass is your healthy body mass.
When you work out and consume more protein, you are building skeletal mass, which is a component of lean body mass.
Thus, consuming protein indirectly is good for your lean body mass.
You must be wondering how lean body mass makes difference to your health and appearance. Please be clear that it is the lean body mass that will give your outer figure, the way you look when you are dressed up.
Note that anesthetists administer medications based on lean body mass only.
