Tile Calculator

Are you planning to use tiles to lay flooring or decorate your home? This tile calculator post gives a comprehensive idea on tile selection, layout planning and estimating the number of tiles that you would require.

☛ Tiles and their Types

Tiles are items associated with the construction of buildings. They are thin, generally found in a rectangular or square shape. Tiles are most widely used for decorating floors, walls, table tops and for decorating the elevation of buildings.

Tiles are generally made of ceramic, stone and metal. Besides, various types of tiles are available to cater to various tiling needs:

Roof tiles are often made out of terracotta and slate, and the most recent ones being made in concrete and plastic, the roof tiles are best fit for protecting your home from the rain. They go well for house elevation and roof decoration purposes.

Stone based tiles such as polished granite and marble give a rich appearance. Their design and appearance vary from tile to tile because of polishing and their natural design, but they are slippery when water spills on them.

Ceramic tiles are easy to maintain and pocket-friendly; however, scratches appear on them when heavy loads are dragged over them. Also, they break easily.

Rubber tiles are lately used more due to the easiness they offer. They are the best fit for commercial purposes such as gyms, swimming pools, dance floors, and workshops. Plastic floor tiles are another recent addition to the pool of tiles, which need no glue while laying. They are best suited for wet floors and schools.

Ceiling tiles are light in weight and are best suited for interior decoration purposes. They occur in multiple designs and colors too.

Glass tiles go well with bathroom and kitchen backlashes; they are difficult to maintain at other places.

Quarry tiles are skid free and suit well for areas such as a patio or restaurant kitchens.

☛ Aspects Involved in Tiles Installation

  • The process of laying tiles is called tessellation, which includes covering a given surface with tiles such that there are no gaps in between them.
  • Though two tiles always look identical, tiles are never laid without any gaps. They are laid with a specified gap in between them. The gap is filled with a concrete-like substance called grout. The lines that you see in between the tiles after they have dried are because of this grout, and they are called Grout lines.
  • Most engineers and masons prefer a size of grout ranging from one-sixteenth of an inch to half an inch, considering various factors such as type and strength of the tiles and the flooring.
  • For roof tiles, gaps will not be allotted to avoid leakage issues when it rains. Instead, roof tiles are overlapped one over the other.
  • Tiles do come in various sizes and most people prefer rectangular or square shaped because laying them is easier.
  • Most people prefer smaller tiles than the larger ones because smaller ones add more look and texture compared to the larger ones. Also, they give lesser wastage than larger ones.
  • It is never a good idea to order exactly the required number of tiles; always order a few more in number. You have to keep wastage during cutting in mind. Besides, you never know when a piece will break!

☛ Interesting Facts about Tiles

  • If you want to highlight your room decor, opt for smaller size tiles. Large sized tiles dominate everything else in the room.
  • The term Tile has its root in Latin. It is taken from the Latin word tegula which means roof tile made of fire clay.
  • Archeological evidence shows that the usage and prevalence of tiles date back to Mesopotamian age.
  • Want to grab the attention of visitors on to your tiles? Lay them diagonally, instead of laying them horizontally. It surely does the purpose with ease.
  • World's largest manufacturer of ceramic tiles in China, followed by India.
